Day 2

(Jessica today!)

We must have been really tired because we all fell asleep quickly last night. Luke even needed to be woken up at 8am! After getting everyone dressed in warm layers, we were off to the grocery store to pick up some fruit and other food to help fill in the meal gaps. On our way back to our B&B, we stopped at a yummy bagel spot to pick up breakfast. Although the menu was in Dutch, I managed to order bagels with bacon, egg, cheese and tomatoes. We took the bagels, and the chocolate pastry they gave us, back to the guest house. The bagels were delicious! And Luke really enjoyed the bacon off of mine...

We relaxed for a few minutes before hitting the road again, this time to see the main square in the daylight. The tourist office was our first stop. Bruges had a great program where you get a $50 sight seeing voucher if you are staying in the city for 2 or more days. We grabbed our voucher and tried to stop at an ATM on our way out, but no luck. Looks like we'll have to give Chase a call later today.

It started raining right around this time so we thought it would be a good idea to find a museum to get some shelter and culture. Unfortunately, at this time we noticed that Luke dropped his toy dinosaur (Dilophosaurus). Adam backtracked, but no luck there either. Luke was very upset and kept repeating, "drop the dino", "drop the dino". We will have to keep a better eye on them. The museum wasn't too far away, so we were out of the rain quickly. Our QR codes worked fine (that was a relief) and we were able to walk around the Groeninge Museum for a bit. The museaum was full of art dating back to the 1400s through present day. Luke wasn't thrilled about being stuck in the stroller, and wanted to run around and touch the paintings. Therefore, it was a quick visit.

After the museum, we started to head back to the B&B. It was almost lunchtime, then naptime. There happened to be a delicious looking waffle stand on the way, so we stopped for a traditional Belgian waffle with strawberries and cream. It was a fan favorite for all. Once we were back, it was time for some salami, apples and croissant (for Luke) and then a nap. He didn't put up too much of a fuss. And I was right behind him. We both knocked out for 2+ hours while Adam was able to relax in the courtyard and walk around the city and take some much needed pictures.

Once naptime was over, we bundled up again and went off to a nearby park/playground. It was a little wet, but completely empty and Luke had a blast climbing, swinging and sliding. Another quick stop back at the guest house and then we were off again, this time to catch the city at sunset and eat dinner. I had been having a hard time remember the city, so Adam took us down the road by our old Hostel where we both stayed back in 2010. It definitely brought back some memories! We were still a little early for dinner, so we meandered along the street, enjoying the lights and brisk temperatures.

At exactly 6pm, we were outside our restaurant ready to eat (Le Bottelier). Similar to yesterday, our QR code did not work for the restaurant. Thankfully, we were still able to verify our vaccines and got in. The place is run by a couple (husband is front of house and wife is the chef!) We started the meal with grilled camembert, bread and salad. It was amazing! Adam ordered the duck breast and I got salmon and linguini. Both were excellent! Luke had the majority of my pasta, so I can confidently say he also enjoyed it. We left feeling very full..it was a good thing we had a little walk to get back to our place.

Once we returned, it was bedtime for the little guy. He went right to sleep. And when I came downstairs, Adam was also asleep on the couch. I guess he missed out on the nap earlier...I'll be heading to bed soon, so we'll be back tomorrow!

Day 9

Hello! Well, we made to it Bavaria last night to the town of Rothenburg (see map below). As the weather was turning colder, we decided this would be more of a relaxing portion of the trip. Believe it or not, our goal for this trip was to have it be more relaxing, which is why we decided to visit a bunch of small towns with Christmas Markets rather than large cities where we'd have to walk and travel extensively to see all the sights. We also thought that Luke would enjoy seeing the small towns - but, as it turned out, he has been mostly enjoying his toys, coloring books, snacks, dinosaurs, and TV shows...oh well.  After a slow morning, we looked outside to see snow dumping down on the town. I stepped outside to gauge what the weather was like, and the wind was whipping up and down the narrow cobble-stone streets. I checked AccuWeather and it said that with the wind chill, the temperature outside was 8 degrees F!  Regardless, we stomped out confidently into the streets to...

Day 11

Good evening from Belgium once again!! After a very long travel day we made it all the way back to Bruges in Belgium from Rothenburg in Germany (see map below). The GPS said the trip was supposed to take 8 hours without traffic. So, we were a bit worried that with traffic it could be much longer - especially since we would potentially be driving during both morning and evening commuting hours. We knew we would need at least one break in the middle for lunch and we had two routes planned - 1) further north through the city of Cologne, or 2) through the Rhine/Mosel Valley.  At our last breakfast in Rothenburg we enjoyed our final meal in the town while we pondered which route to take and chased Luke around the dining room. In the end we decided for option 2 because we were worried there might be too much traffic going in and out of a major city like Cologne. Plus, there is a small town in the Mosel River Valley called Cochem which we both really enjoyed on our first Europe trip toget...

Day 4

Jessica today! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Our day started off bright and early at 6:30am. Thankfully, we had packed the night before, so we quickly got dressed and were out the door by 7am for our journey to the Alsace region of France. We walked to our car and said goodbye to Bruges for now...we'll be back in a little over a week. Our drive took us through morning rush our outside of Brussels. Luke didn't seem to mind as it meant extra snacks and extra Cocomelon sing-a-long show for him.  After 2.5 hours or so, we arrived at our first stop, Dinant (still in Belgium). This was another location that Adam and I visited on our Europe trip in 2010. When we noticed it was right on our route we decided it would make a good spot to stretch our legs and break up the journey.  I don't think we were prepared for how cold it was (0°C or 32°F, literally freezing!). We hopped out of the car, bundled up, and took a short walk to the citadel. Adam snapped a few pictures, but that was...
