Day 6

Hello from Ribeauville! (Jessica writing today).

The morning started off nice and slow with an 8am wake up in Colmar. We started to get our things together and made our way into town around 9:30am for some last minute sightseeing and breakfast. I opted for something a little heartier than a pastry today and found a bagel shop. Bacon, egg and cheese was exactly what was needed. Adam and Luke were even kind enough to help out with what I couldn't finish. We took some pictures and walked through the Christmas Markets in the daylight. The forecast called for rain but the skies were blue and clear.

We said goodbye to Colmar around 11am and made the quick 10 minute drive to the small town of Eguisheim for lunch and more Christmas Markets. The city was already bustling so we were very lucky to find close parking. Our luck ran out though as it started to rain heavily right as we were parking. We quickly got out the stroller and Luke and made our way into the city to find some shelter and lunch. The restaurant we went to was called Caveau Heuhaus. Caveau means "cave" in French, which explains why we had to go down a flight of stairs upon entering. We were the first ones in, but within 5 minutes every table was full! Adam was brave and ordered escargot (snails) and the local tarte flambee (a thin-crust, pizza-like dish, but with cottage cheese, cream cheese, onions and bacon on top). I played it safe with a salad and french fries (I was still full from my bagel!). Luke took it upon himself to eat the majority of the fries.

Our luck turned and as soon as we finished, the skies had cleared so we headed out into the town once more to explore their Christmas Markets. The town was very cute and had lots of pretty streets all decked out for the holidays. Luke was even able to walk (run) around for a bit. He found some puddles to splash in. And we even got our first family pic of the trip! We made our way back to the car and drove to our final destination of the evening, Ribeauville - a short 25 minutes away.

Once Adam found parking (a little more challenging this time), he went off to get us checked in while Luke napped in the car. The nap was short lived and the little boy was awake and chatting away shortly after Adam left. Once he returned, we lugged all of our stuff to the BnB and got settled in. Adam went into town to get some groceries and see the town. He returned with many pictures, and pasta for dinner. Luke was a ball of energy so we let him run free while Adam cooked. Pasta was exactly what we needed tonight.

It was approaching 6pm and due to Luke's short nap, we opted for early bedtime. Unfortunately this place doesn't have a crib/packnplay, so I had to do some convincing and laying down to get him to sleep in a big bed. After an hour, he was out. Adam drove to the nearby town of Riquewihr to scope it out for us. It's on our agenda tomorrow! Hopefully we make it through the night with Luke in a real bed!

Day 9

Hello! Well, we made to it Bavaria last night to the town of Rothenburg (see map below). As the weather was turning colder, we decided this would be more of a relaxing portion of the trip. Believe it or not, our goal for this trip was to have it be more relaxing, which is why we decided to visit a bunch of small towns with Christmas Markets rather than large cities where we'd have to walk and travel extensively to see all the sights. We also thought that Luke would enjoy seeing the small towns - but, as it turned out, he has been mostly enjoying his toys, coloring books, snacks, dinosaurs, and TV shows...oh well.  After a slow morning, we looked outside to see snow dumping down on the town. I stepped outside to gauge what the weather was like, and the wind was whipping up and down the narrow cobble-stone streets. I checked AccuWeather and it said that with the wind chill, the temperature outside was 8 degrees F!  Regardless, we stomped out confidently into the streets to...

Day 11

Good evening from Belgium once again!! After a very long travel day we made it all the way back to Bruges in Belgium from Rothenburg in Germany (see map below). The GPS said the trip was supposed to take 8 hours without traffic. So, we were a bit worried that with traffic it could be much longer - especially since we would potentially be driving during both morning and evening commuting hours. We knew we would need at least one break in the middle for lunch and we had two routes planned - 1) further north through the city of Cologne, or 2) through the Rhine/Mosel Valley.  At our last breakfast in Rothenburg we enjoyed our final meal in the town while we pondered which route to take and chased Luke around the dining room. In the end we decided for option 2 because we were worried there might be too much traffic going in and out of a major city like Cologne. Plus, there is a small town in the Mosel River Valley called Cochem which we both really enjoyed on our first Europe trip toget...

Day 4

Jessica today! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Our day started off bright and early at 6:30am. Thankfully, we had packed the night before, so we quickly got dressed and were out the door by 7am for our journey to the Alsace region of France. We walked to our car and said goodbye to Bruges for now...we'll be back in a little over a week. Our drive took us through morning rush our outside of Brussels. Luke didn't seem to mind as it meant extra snacks and extra Cocomelon sing-a-long show for him.  After 2.5 hours or so, we arrived at our first stop, Dinant (still in Belgium). This was another location that Adam and I visited on our Europe trip in 2010. When we noticed it was right on our route we decided it would make a good spot to stretch our legs and break up the journey.  I don't think we were prepared for how cold it was (0°C or 32°F, literally freezing!). We hopped out of the car, bundled up, and took a short walk to the citadel. Adam snapped a few pictures, but that was...
